RAOC Sheltered Environment
Every member of the RAOC staff is specially trained in providing one-on-one assistance to each of our employees.  We offer employees transportation, if needed, to and from work. Our facilities are continually upgraded to enhance handicapped accessibility. The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) performs detailed tri-annual inspections of RAOC’s operations and has awarded RAOC full accreditation. The combination of a trained, caring staff, handicapped accessibility and CARF accreditation provides our employees with a safe environment that responds to their unique emotional and physical needs.

Training
RAOC’s training staff teaches the skills needed to be successful in a modern manufacturing environment. Each year, about 10% of the workforce successfully transitions to private sector jobs in the community that offer competitive compensation and benefits.

Situational Assessment
Situational assessment is an on-site evaluation period to determine if the employee has the potential to work productively in a sheltered employment setting. Prospective employees are referred to RAOC by the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services for situational assessment and extended employment services. During the assessment period, an individual’s progress is recorded through production records, individual surveys and meetings with staff and rehabilitation counselors. At the conclusion of the assessment period, the prospective employee makes a decision to remain at the Center in sheltered employment or to pursue other options of employment or training.

Socialization
The relaxed interface among employees, staff, and volunteers helps to provide the skills needed to successfully deal with life outside of work. An important aspect of our successful center-based facility is the ability to offer a wide variety of social activities that allow the employees to develop close relationships with others and to help each other overcome some of the limitations of their disabilities. There are regularly scheduled meals prepared by our volunteers, company-sponsored pizza parties, picnics, and many other special events and celebrations.
